IT Systems Administrator

Basic Function

Supports, monitors, tests, and troubleshoots hardware and software problems pertaining to the LAN (Local Area Network), SAN (Storage Area Network) and WAN (Wide Area Network). Recommends and schedules repairs. Provides end user support for all LAN/WAN based applications. Designs, installs and supports server system(s) and supporting software.  Designs, installs and supports virtual server systems (VMWare) over a SAN (Storage Area Network).  Administration of Active Directory, DNS, DHCP and other domain specific services.  Installs and configures workstations and standard PC builds. Familiar with a variety of the field's standard concepts, practices, and procedures. Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Performs a variety of complicated tasks. A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected.


Major Responsibilities

  • Supports business information related IT systems, subsystems, networking equipment, and site software applications.  These systems include:  firewalls, routers/switches (Cisco), VOIP services and equipment, wireless hardware and applications, access control devices and hardware, etc.
  •  Provides technical support and assistance to all teams and departments across Augusta and Cambridge locations.
  •  Writes and maintains accurate system documentation and procedures as it pertains to IT.
  •  Interacts with various vendors on and off site in support of IT related activities and projects.
  •  Manages Helpdesk requests and messages.
  •  Performs analysis of system capabilities to resolve questions involving program specifications, intended use and system accessibility to database and system management.
  •  Designs, writes, tests and implements software solutions and systems that are in compliance with site and corporate standards.
  •  Participates in projects to design, justify, develop, and install new IT systems.
  •  Interacts with the IT Operations Manager during network and system design, implementation of strategies, procedure development and testing, and disaster recovery planning.
  •  Interacts with users to resolve issues and to provide functional instruction on use of software and operating systems.
  •  Consults with the IT Operations Manager during application development and support activities.
  •  Participates in team activities, serves in leadership roles, and is receptive to receiving and giving constructive feedback to team members and management.
  •  Performs system administration functions for systems assigned by supervisor.

 Work schedule will vary for extraordinary conditions, including 24-hour on-call support.



 Position Qualifications

 Education/Learning Experience


  1. Associates degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or Computer Networking or related computer degree or high school diploma and equivalent related work experience.

 Work Experience

Required: 3-5 years overall experience with specific experience in the following areas:

  1. Network OS support (at least 2 years with client/server systems),
  2. Client/server application support (off-the-shelf, custom and/or vendor developed),
  3. VMWare and/or HyperV Virtualization technology,
  4. EMC/Dell SAN (or similar) technology and management (at least 1 year),
  5. Firewall maintenance and configuration,
  6. LAN/WAN hardware and configuration support and maintenance
  7. End user technical support




  1. Good interpersonal skills are necessary for frequent interactions with users, managers, contractors, and vendors.
  2. Must be able to follow detailed instructions as well as work in a safe and responsible manner.
  3. Ability to track and manage multiple tasks.
  4. Must be able to interact as part of a team environment.



Physical demand requirements are those associated with sedentary work.  Must be able to climb stairs and ladders when required.  Must be able to lift computers and computer equipment up to 50 lbs.


Must be able to follow and give detailed instructions as well as work in a safe and responsible manner and ensure others do, also.  Work schedule may vary during shutdowns and other extraordinary conditions.  Must be able to work on a continuous basis with minimum absences.
